Fall 2007 - Spring 2008
Internship Year - 3rd Grade at Davison Elementary
Fall 2007:
TE 501 - Internship Teaching Diverse Learners I
TE 801 - Professional Roles and Teaching Practice I
TE 802 - Reflection and Inquiry Teaching Practice I
Spring 2008:
TE 502 - Internship Teaching Diverse Learners II
TE 803 - Professional Roles and Teaching Practice II
TE 804 - Reflection and Inquiry Teaching Practice II
After graduating from MSU's College of Education in the spring of 2007, I spent a year student teaching at Davison Elementary in Detroit, MI. While student teaching, I worked closely with the other Detroit Area Elementary Team interns learning best practices for teaching literacy, mathematics, science, and social studies. I created math, literacy, science, and social studies units that I was able to teach in the third grade classroom. In these units, I planned a pre-assessment, lesson sequences, and assessments. I also was able to focus on a few students to track how these units affected their understanding of the key concepts. Through this experience I gained confidence teaching in an urban setting, explored classroom management strategies, and discovered my passion for working in an urban setting.

TE 836 - Awards and Classics of Children's Literature
Professor: Laura Apol
Grade: 4.0
Throughout TE 836 we studied the different "classic" pieces of children's literature. We compared these classics to films made based on the classic pieces of literature. We also spent time learning about the different awards that can be given to children's literature (who gives the awards, how winners are chosen, books that have won the awards, and necessary criteria for each award). The roles these classic books have in a modern classroom was also discussed. This was my first experience with really studying children's literature and learned how important it is to choose children's literature very carefully.

ED 800 - Concepts of Educational Inquiry
Professor: Steven Weiland
Grade: 4.0
In ED 800, we studied different theories about education inquiry. Throughout the course we studied the different forms of inquiry, their "goals, methods, uses, and meanings." We read about and discussed the following issues surrounding inquiry: teacher and classroom research, theories of intelligence and the curriculum, the history of educational inquiry, and "ethnographic participant and observation." I learned a lot about the different kinds of inquiry that have influenced educational philosophy.

TE 855 - Teaching School Mathematics
Professor: Bieda
Grade: 4.0
In this course we explored the history of how mathematics has been taught in schools. We then studied how mathematics can be taught for understanding rather than by simply following the rules that are taught. I learned that when left to explore the mathematical concepts, students create their own deep understandings of mathematical ideas. When engaged in mathematical exploration, the teacher should be a facilitator for the students' discovery.

TE 848 - Methods of Writing Instruction
Professor: Janine Certo
Grade: 4.0
In TE 848 we explored the different writing genres. Not only did we write in many different genres, but we studied how to incorporate these genres into a classroom. I then focused on applying what we learned about writing best teaching practices in my own classroom. I learned that teaching writing is a delicate art that requires much from the teacher.

TE 849 - Methods and Materials for Teaching Children's and Adolescent Literature
Professor: Laura Apol
Grade: 4.0
In this course we studied different genres of children's literature and the different issues associated with each of these genres. We read various children's texts and discussed them in great detail. Not only did we discuss the literature, but we spoke about how to involve children in these different genres of literature. I learned that children's literature is more varied than I ever thought it was before, and that as teachers, we need to choose texts to use in classrooms very carefully.
